13-Digit
ISBN Overview for Retailers
Utilizing Major POS Systems
Retailers utilizing a POS system for EDI ordering
will need to contact their POS system provider to ensure their
systems are ready for the 13-Digit ISBN conversion on January
1, 2007. As of this date, the 10-Digit ISBN is to be officially
replaced by the 13-Digit ISBN. Meaning, to remain compliant with
Pubnet and industry standards by 2007—EDI translators must
have the capability of storing, processing, and transmitting 13-Digit
ISBNs. As a best practice during the 2005-2007 transition to this
conversion, Pubnet recommends all EDI documents include both a
10-Digit and 13-Digit ISBN. Research has shown this to be a widely
common practice already in place within the industry and among
POS providers.
Eventually,
the 10-Digit ISBN will be discontinued and dropped from the Pubnet
Standard. Until that time, Pubnet will keep an active list of
the formats individual vendors are accepting as well as major
POS systems.

From
a programming standpoint, the changes have been amended to the
current
online Pubnet Standards Documents under the Product/Service
ID Qualifier element name. The changes are rather simple to implement
for those familiar with EDI protocol and we urge all POS systems
to integrate them as soon as possible to ensure the proper receipt
and delivery of Pubnet EDI orders moving forward. Contact your
POS provider for specific details relating to your service.
