Publishers Group West Update - New Temporary Name, New SAN, Where to Learn More
With the recent bankruptcy of AMS, Publishers Group West (PGW) has been in the news a lot lately. Here are some important things to know about PGW and Pubnet.
Effective 3/1/2007, the majority of PGW publishers have started a new relationship with Perseus Books Group, with Perseus obtaining their distribution contracts. PGW staff still work on behalf of these publishers and will continue to for at least the contracted 5 month transition period which ends 7/31/07.
Technically PGW is now known as Transition Vendor and will be for the 5 month transition period. To lessen the confusion and allow continuity for sales and marketing efforts, they continue to use the name PGW but will use Transition Vendor when legally or financially necessary.
Effective immediately all orders for books currently distributed by PGW/Transition Vendor should be sent to SAN #760-5129. Discontinue using SAN #202-8522.
PGW has set up a transition web page at www.pgw.com/home/transition.aspx which is the best source of information about the status of the transition of PGW’s publisher partners. This is the place to learn more about the legal issues involved and find out which publishers are moving to Perseus and which are moving to other publishers.
If you have any questions, or remain unsure about which titles are available from PGW/Transition Vendor, contact your PGW/Transition Vendor sales rep or call PGW/Transition Vendor customer service at 800-788-3123.
Bottom-line, the nice folks at PGW/Transition Vendor are waiting for your Pubnet orders and look forward to shipping your books!

Congratulations to our Retail Survey iPod Winner
Congratulations to Ed Castrege, Assistant Director of Store Operations at Villanova University, who is the lucky winner of our 2006 Retail Survey iPod.
Thanks to everyone who responded to our surveys - we heard from hundreds of publishers and retailers, and tens of POS vendors. Because of input from you, everyone at Pubnet now has a better understanding of your capabilities today and your plans for tomorrow, and we are committed to enhancing our product in ways that truly meet your needs.

Recap of the Pubnet User Group - March 4-5, 2007
Pubnet held its fourth annual User Group Meeting on March 4-5, returning for the second year in a row to Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale, Illinois. This year’s Pubnet User Group brought together publishers, booksellers, POS vendors, and EDI developers in an open forum that encouraged a spirited conversation about how to improve the publishing supply chain from end-to-end.
This day and a half-long meeting covered a wide range of topics of interest to the community, from standards, scorecards and certification, to more effective document trading, to Pubnet’s new Instant Response functionality.
Kicking off the meeting was a keynote address from Michael Healy, Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group ( www.bisg.org ). Mr. Healy’s presentation “Getting the most from today’s & tomorrow’s supply chain” examined both the big picture - how a digital future will transform today’s supply chain - and the nitty-gritty of doing business today - effectively identifying and describing books, the need to adopt industry-wide best practices for electronic trading, establishing carton labeling standards, etc. It set the tone for the meeting by reinforcing how the supply chain is one of the most pressing and complex issues the publishing industry faces today.
The meeting then switched gears to focus on how Pubnet is enhancing the supply chain through more effective electronic ordering.
Charles Halpin, General Manager of the Bowker's Supply Chain Business Unit, walked the audience through Pubnet's “State of the Union address” covering developments since the last User Group meeting, including 2006 results, recent product developments, Pubnet’s conversion to ISBN-13, and 2007 strategic initiatives and partnership opportunities.
Jim McLaughlin, Director of Operations Analysis and Order Fulfillment, Penguin Group (USA), presented a publisher case study on their experience using Pubnet’s new Instant Response functionality, which combines technology from both Pubnet and PubEasy to provide immediate purchase order acknowledgments (POAs) to retailers. Instant Response not only delivers faster service to retailers, it provides an alternative to non-ISBN13-compliant direct electronic order ("DEO") dial-up ordering systems offered by many publishers. Learn more about Instant Response here.
The Pubnet team then shared the results of market research we conducted in 4Q 2006 designed to identify the strengths, weaknesses and gaps between the EDI capabilities of publishers and POS vendors and the ordering preferences of our retail users. Pubnet will use this information to establish a scorecard for each Pubnet publisher and POS vendor to create more transparency between trading partners. Look for more updates on the scorecard project later in 2007.
The day also included a POS Vendor Roundtable featuring Dave Walton from IBID/IRT and Pat Phillips from Missouri Book System, who shared their views on the challenges facing POS vendors in each of Pubnet’s three trading communities and what they are hearing from their retail customers about EDI and supply chain efficiency.
Thank you to all of our Pubnet partners who attended - it was a memorable event and we value your participation. Did you miss it? Download any of this year’s User Group presentations from the Pubnet web site by clicking here.
