Welcome to the summer 2006 issue of the Pubnet Newsletter! We’ve been keeping busy in the first half of 2006. The community has grown substantially, with 23 new vendors and 120 new retailers in the US, Christian and Canadian markets.

Pubnet staff has been working with the EDI Certification Committee members to begin drafting a certification process along with a scorecard to evaluate vendor EDI capabilities.

Certification committee members participated in a highly useful conference call in late February to review a preliminary certification program. As a result of the meeting, the team agreed to form three task forces to take a more granular look at what certification will entail. The three task forces are:

• Document elements
• Certification levels
• ISBN-13 readiness

Pubnet staff will be getting in touch with task force members in August to plan working group meetings in September.

By January 1, 2007, retailers and suppliers in U.S. and Canada are required to have the ability to read, process and store all ISBNs as 13 digits. This will enable the book industry to resolve a pending shortage of new ISBN assignments and allows ISBNs to become integrated with Global Trade Identifier Numbers (GTINs), including the UCC/EAN-14.

Pubnet staff has been busy in the first half of 2006 certifying members of our trading community for ISBN-13 readiness. Here’s the state of compliance testing for Point of Sale vendor partners as of mid-June 2006.

If You Use Off-the-Shelf or Third Party POS Software
Check the list of POS vendors in this newsletter. If you do not see your POS system listed (either as ISBN-13 compliant or in testing / in discussion to test), you may want to contact them to find out what their plans are to become ISBN-13 compliant by the Dec 31st deadline. If do not have a current maintenance agreement with them, you may need to contact your POS representative to verify the steps needed to receive the update for ISBN-13.

Tom Morey, Pubnet Product Manager

Tom Morey joined the Pubnet team in May as Product Manager, and is responsible for managing day-to-day Pubnet operations, planning development strategies and coordinating internal resources to deliver the best possible experience to Pubnet users.

Tom has 20 years of experience in business analysis, software development and marketing. Prior to joining Pubnet, Tom held senior positions at Microforum, Dun & Bradstreet, Chase Manhattan Bank, and RR Donnelley & Sons. He has an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BBA in business from the University of Miami (FL).

Mark Rodrigues, Pubnet Project Manager

Mark Rodrigues joined Pubnet in July after a nine year career at Jones and Bartlett Publishers, where he served most recently as Senior Network Administrator. Mark brings with him a thorough knowledge of both publishing process workflow and information technology project implementation. As Pubnet’s Project Manager, he’s responsible for keeping all development projects on time and on budget.

Effective immediately, University of Illinois Press (SAN 2027348) is no longer being distributed by Johns Hopkins University Press and will be moving distribution to Chicago Distribution Center (University of Chicago Press - SAN 2025280)

Effective July 1, 2006, Southern Illinois University Press (SAN 2033623) is also moving distribution to Chicago Distribution Center (University of Chicago Press - SAN 2025280). Effective immediately, Encounter Books (SAN 2531585) distribution is moving distribution to National Book Network (SAN 6300065).

In November of 2005, Morehouse Publishing -- previously a part of the Continuum International Publishing Group, Inc. -- was sold to Church Publishing Incorporated. However, as part of the separation agreement, Continuum agreed to act as Morehouse's distributor for the foreseeable future. The SAN you have been using for Morehouse has been transferred to Continuum. All orders for Continuum or Morehouse titles will continue to use SAN #2026511.

Effective immediately, The University of Michigan Press (SAN 2025280) is no longer being distributed by Chicago Distribution Center (University of Chicago Press) and will be moving distribution to CDS (SAN 631760X).
