Pubnet Prepares for ISBN-13 Transition

January 1, 2005 marks the book industry’s “Sunrise” or beginning of the conversion to the 13-Digit ISBN. By January 1, 2007, retailers and suppliers in U.S. and Canada are required to have the ability to read, process and store all ISBNs as 13 digits. This will enable the book industry to resolve a pending shortage of new ISBN assignments and allows ISBNs to become integrated with Global Trade Identifier Numbers (GTINs), including the UCC/EAN-14. Addressing this change, Pubnet is currently taking steps to ensure all services remain uninterrupted during the 2005-2007 transition.

In the Works

Pubnet continuously develops tools and services that our members require to make EDI trading even more effective and efficient. As a result of this driving factor, Pubnet has many projects in the works. Beta-testing is available for anyone interested in receiving a first look at these innovative solutions. For more information about beta-testing any of these products, contact us by emailing info@pubnet.org or calling 1-800-PUBNET-1 (1-800-782-6381).

Some products currently in the works include:

Cross-Country Trading – Offers those using a C-BISAC 4010 EDI standard to trade with Pubnet members using a BISAC 3060 EDI standard automatically -- without any programming changes required. This will allow the trading of Canadian and US standards as one standard. This process is currently in testing and more news will be released once the testing period is complete.

Publisher Order Wizard (POW) – This module provides publishers with a web-based solution to send/ receive EDI documents. POW is useful for enabling EDI capabilities with large retail chains that often require the use of EDI to receive preferred trading terms.

General Merchandise EDI – The new ordering module will take the time-tested functionality of book ordering available through bookstores POS systems or Pubnet POW account, and make it available for ordering General Merchandise like athletic clothing, stationary, computer accessories and much more…

Contact us today to become a beta-tester of the solutions today that will drive the EDI industry tomorrow.

Pubnet Transition Cut-Off Oct. 1

Pubnet, the industry’s EDI e-commerce provider, went live on Oct. 1, severing all connections with X•net’s former MISG network.

The transition marks the end of exorbitant charges to frequently check e-commerce mailboxes for orders and will begin to encourage rapid Purchase Order Acknowledgements responses — a key retailer requirement to use EDI.

EDI, or Electronic Data Interchange, is a standardized e-commerce system that eventually will lead to fully automated e-commerce transactions among trading partners.
