- Fifth Party Logistics is the discipline that bridges the gaps left in
traditional Third Party Logistics providers and the new Fourth Party
Logistics Providers.
- Where 4pl's attempt to provide supply chain planning with their own
optimization software and business process reengineering of 3pl
processes, 5pl's leverage the buyer's or First Party's existing
technology and infrastructure to drive costs out of the supply chain by
transforming to a Virtual Organization (v-org).
- 5pl is the evolutionary step towards Zero Party Logistics. The goal of
5pl services is to ultimately eliminate the need for 3pl's and 4pl’s,
quickly transitioning into a lights-out supply chain.

|
- Zero Party Logistics is the disintermediation of 3pl and 4pl’s using 5pl
disciplines to transform a company into a v-org.
- Zero Party Logistics really means that the traditional logistics
departments become nothing more than an integrated information chain
between buyers and carriers.
- All optimization and planning is conducted using either a company's own
resources or 5pl services.
- All execution of the plan is conducted using a company's own ERP system.
In a v-org, contractual logistics requirements then become a function of
the financial department.
